Auto insurance has two major parts, liability and comprehensive.  Most states require liability coverage for your car at a minimum level should you be involved in an accident.  Liability coverage is often listed in this format 15,000/30,000/5,000.  That means there is maximum of $15,000 coverage per person per accident, with a total $30,000 limit per accident.  The final number represents $5,000 for property damage during that accident.  Basic coverage starts at 25,000/50,000/25,000 which for most customers is a good starting point.

Stearns Helpful Tip…
Stearns Insurance recommends for all auto insurance to have a base level 100,000/300,000/50,000 coverage for the vehicle.  In an age where lawsuits are ever more common, protect yourself with slightly higher than required coverage for extra peace of mind.

Stearns Insurance Service AutoThe other important item to know before buying insurance is if you want Collision coverage or Comprehensive coverage.  The difference is that with collision coverage you are going to be protected while driving the vehicle.  Comprehensive coverage is for when your vehicle is involved in a fire, stolen or damaged by other natural hazards like water or hail.

In order to keep premiums low, have a higher deductible. This change from a $250 deductible to a $1,000 deductible could save you hundreds of dollars each year, the down side is that you may pay more out of pocket for your repairs when an accident does occur.

Auto insurance prices are based on the driver, car and location of the car.  This is a little different from home insurance which is based on the location of the home.  Auto insurance has another difference in that the owner of the car is rated based on prior driving history where that a prior home owner’s claim will not necessarily follow them when they purchase a new home.  Find out ore about auto insurance by calling our insurance experts at (888) 214-7525 or request a free no-obligation quote online.
